the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday gave nod for recruiting 5500 jawans in the border wing of Punjab Home Guards.
Chandigarh, April 24: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made a decisive move. This move aims to curb cross-border drug smuggling and bolster internal security. He has approved the recruitment of 5,500 Home Guards jawans under the Border Wing of Punjab Police. These personnel will be deployed across the seven border districts of Punjab. They will form a robust second line of defence behind the Border Security Force (BSF).
Enhanced Security Post Pahalgam Terror Attack
During a high-level meeting at his official residence, CM Mann highlighted the urgent need for fortified border vigilance. This is necessary in light of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. He emphasized that the newly recruited jawans will support BSF operations and prevent infiltration by elements escaping initial security nets.
“The state is determined to eliminate any threats to Punjab’s safety. These Home Guards will serve as an extended shield for our international borders,” said Bhagwant Mann.
Home Guards : Second Line of Defence Across 500 KM Border
With over 500 kilometers of international border, Punjab remains vulnerable to cross-border narcotics trafficking and terror activities. The creation of a dedicated Border Wing within the Punjab Home Guards aims to intercept such threats, ensuring greater coordination with the BSF and reducing security lapses.
CM Mann to Seek Centre’s Support
CM Mann also announced plans to approach the Union Home Minister to seek financial and logistical support from the central government for this initiative. While Punjab has the manpower and dedication, additional resources from the Centre will ensure the successful implementation of this vital security upgrade.
“Punjab has the courage, experience, and commitment. Now, we will reach out to the Government of India to supplement our efforts,” the Chief Minister added.
Statewide Recruitment for Other Forces
The government will induct over 400 additional Home Guard jawans into the Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF) and the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) to enhance public safety and disaster preparedness, in addition to recruiting 5,500 jawans for the Border Wing.. This move not only strengthens law enforcement but also creates new employment opportunities for the youth of Punjab.
