The procedure used angled endoscopic visualization and was assisted by navigation.
The Team PGIMER led by Prof. Dhandapani SS has made groundbreaking advancements in neurosurgery. They published three world-first minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques. These were featured in esteemed medical journals. In a recent publication in the “Journal of Clinical Neuroscience,” Neurosurgeons Prof. Dhandapani SS and Dr. Sushant Sahoo, along with ENT surgeon Prof. Rijuneeta, described the successful endonasal endoscopy for a giant pituitary tumor.
The doctors diagnosed the patient with Acromegaly and identified conchal and dysplastic nasal sinuses. This pioneering technique involved creating a bony tunnel using a drill. The procedure used angled endoscopic visualization and assisted navigation. This method resulted in the successful removal of the tumor.
The team published in the journal Operative Neurosurgery. They reported the world’s first technical instance of endoscopic skull base surgery through the nose for a large craniopharyngioma. This was in a child as young as 16 months. Utilizing micro instruments and smaller profile endoscopes, they achieved a remarkable feat in the field of pediatric neurosurgery.
Additionally, Prof. Dhandapani’s publication in “World Neurosurgery” described the world’s first minimally invasive spine fixation. This was performed for a total dislocation of the spine at the mid-back. This is a rare and challenging injury. It typically results in paralysis of the limbs. The innovative technique involved O-arm-based percutaneous screws. It included a unique rod insertion method. This offered a less invasive approach to achieving spinal fixation.
These groundbreaking publications highlight the skill and innovation of the PGIMER team under Prof. Dhandapani SS. They position the team as leaders in the field of neurosurgery. The team is paving the way for future advancements in minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques.
