The Commission issues a notice to Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report stating that police personnel illegally detained the husband of a gang-rape victim at a police post. Reportedly, the police personnel allegedly demanded Rs 1.2 lakh bribe and also received a part amount of Rs 50,000 from the victim to release her husband.Allegedly, the SHO of Khurja Police Station in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, also sexually assaulted the victim.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the victim woman and her husband. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report, carried on 17th November 2025, the victim woman on the invitation of one of her husband’s friends went to Aligarh to see an exhibition in 2024. He intoxicated her and subjected her to gang rape for one and a half months while keeping her in captivity. He also converted her to another religion. The victim somehow managed to escape her perpetrators and approached a Police Post to make a complaint. The police called her husband.The police personnel argued with him, assaulted him, and then detained him.
