Rajeev Vihar Army Welfare Housing Society Pays Solemn Tribute to Martyr 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous) on His Martyrdom Day
Chandigarh, 19 July 2025 – The Rajeev Vihar Army Welfare Housing Society, Sector 13, Chandigarh today commemorated the martyrdom day of 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), paying heartfelt tributes to the gallant officer whose supreme sacrifice continues to inspire generations.
The Rajeev Vihar Army Welfare Housing Society bears the name of 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu with pride. It honours his unparalleled valour and devotion to duty.
Young Hero of Assam Regiment Martyred Fighting LTTE
On 19 July 1988, as a young officer of the 7th Battalion, The Assam Regiment, 2/Lt Sandhu attained martyrdom. He was only 21 years old. He bravely combated LTTE militants in Sri Lanka during a critical operation as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). His fearless leadership and indomitable spirit inflicted heavy losses upon the militants. His gallant action earned him the nation’s gratitude and the Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous).
Born on 12 November 1966 in Chandigarh, to Shri Devinder Singh Sandhu, a dedicated academician ex St. John’s School, and Smt Jaikanta, who was a distinguished former SP in Punjab Police. 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu was the only son of his parents. He completed his schooling at St. John’s High School and graduated from D.A.V. College, ChandigarhDriven by his passion to serve the nation, he commissioned from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, on 5 March 1988. He joined the 7th Battalion, The Assam Regiment. The regiment supported the Sri Lankan Army in combating insurgency after its deployment in Sri Lanka.
Rajeev Vihar Pays Tribute to 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu’s Sacrifice
To mark his sacrifice and keep his legacy alive, the Rajeev ViArmy Welfare Housing Society held a special ceremony.Serving and veteran Army officers and families of the ASSAM Regiment from Chandimandir Military Station and the tricity attended it. A large number of residents of the Society and dignitaries also attended. Army Commander Western Command, Station Commander Chandimandir, and the Colonel of the Assam Regiment laid wreaths. Col DS Sra, President Rajeev Vihar, and other veterans & families also laid wreaths. Col Gur Sevak Singh, President Modern Housing Complex Manimajra, participated too.People paid tributes to honour his memory and supreme sacrifice for the country.
“We are proud to preserve and promote the legacy of 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu. His courage, commitment, and devotion to duty remind us all of the true meaning of service to the nation. On his martyrdom day, we salute his extraordinary heroism,” said the President of the Society.
The society reiterated its pledge to support the welfare of armed forces personnel and their families. It also aims to inspire the younger generation. They are encouraged to follow the path of duty, honour, and sacrifice exemplified by 2/Lt Rajeev Sandhu.
