Chandigarh, December 8 – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today strongly protested the State Election Commission’s decision to hold elections for five municipal corporations and 43 municipal councils on December 21. The party stated that the Commission’s decision to conduct the elections during a period when Sikhs mourn the supreme sacrifices of the four Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh had hurt the Sikh community’s sentiments.

In a statement, SAD senior leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema expressed shock over the Election Commission’s decision to schedule the elections on December 21, a day marking the sacrifices of the two elder Sahibzadas. He called it unfortunate that the Commission went ahead with the election date despite appeals from the SAD and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to avoid holding elections in the latter half of December.
Dr. Cheema Urges Commission to Postpone Municipal Elections
Dr. Cheema urged the Commission to withdraw its order and issue new instructions to hold the local body elections in January instead.He emphasized that past elections had followed similar precedents, with dates deferred due to holy days or significant events.. He noted that Sikhs observe a fortnight of mourning in December for the martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas, and holding elections during this period would be inappropriate.

Dr. Cheema also confirmed that the SAD would contest the elections and would soon hold meetings to select party candidates and strategize for the elections.
