Chandigarh , July 28: Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon strongly condemned the police lathi-charge on sanitation workers and women who were peacefully protesting in Barnala over their legitimate demands.
Dhillon visited the Civil Hospital in Barnala to enquire about the condition of the injured workers and launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government and the hospital administration over their handling of the incident. He also extended financial assistance of ₹10,000 each to 13 injured workers to support their medical treatment. Earlier, he also joined the ongoing protest of sanitation workers at the Municipal Corporation office and assured them that the Bharatiya Janata Party would firmly stand with them in their struggle.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhillon said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann often described peaceful protests as the democratic right of every citizen. However, under his government, poor women and sanitation workers demanding their rightful dues have been subjected to a brutal lathi-charge. He alleged that several workers sustained serious injuries, with some suffering head wounds while others sustained fractures to their legs and shoulders.
He said sanitation workers perform the essential task of keeping cities clean and deserve the highest respect and gratitude. Instead of addressing their legitimate demands, the government has resorted to using force against these hardworking employees.
Dhillon further said that in 2022, Arvind Kejriwal had promised to regularise all employees, but the government betrayed sanitation workers even during the Municipal Corporation elections. He alleged that such repression is not new, recalling similar police action against MGNREGA workers in Khanna and unemployed youth in Patiala.
Questioning the government’s claims of ushering in a “health revolution,” Dhillon said even the injured workers were allegedly not receiving proper medical care in government hospitals. He claimed that X-ray machines were non-functional and that an acute shortage of doctors was causing immense hardship to patients.
Dhillon said the Bharatiya Janata Party has already met the Punjab Governor and demanded strict action against those responsible. He reiterated that the BJP stands firmly with sanitation workers at every level. He demanded immediate and adequate compensation for the injured workers, strict legal action against the officials responsible for the alleged excesses, and an early resolution of the workers’ demands instead of suppressing peaceful protests through force.
Warning the government, Dhillon said that the people of Punjab would hold it accountable for every act of repression and every baton blow inflicted on innocent citizens.
