DRI seizes 3,00,000 electronic cigarettes/vapes worth Rs. 120 crore in a major crackdown on e-cigarette smuggling racket across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal
Pip: Truth India News is where groundwater tables, cycling rallies, and vape smugglers somehow share the same morning briefing — and honestly, that’s the most accurate summary of modern India you’ll find anywhere. Podcast Episode : Policy Shifts And Public Health
Mara: Admin has been covering a lot of ground today — Punjab’s water conservation push, a nationwide fitness milestone tied to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and enforcement action against smuggled goods and financial fraud.
Pip: Let’s start with the fields — and the water underneath them.
Podcast Episode : Punjab Bets Big on Water-Smart Rice Farming
Mara: Punjab is staring down a falling water table, and the state’s response is a technique called Direct Seeding of Rice — skipping the traditional puddling and transplantation entirely, and seeding paddy directly into the field.
Pip: Agriculture Minister Khudian put the stakes plainly: “This is a farmer-led revolution in water conservation. The remarkable response in 2025-26 has laid a strong foundation. Now, with a Rs 40-crore outlay and a target of 5 lakh acres for 2026-27, we are scaling up our commitment to save precious groundwater.”
Mara: What that means in practice is a 15 to 20 percent reduction in irrigation water use, plus meaningfully lower labour costs — with Rs 1,500 per acre going directly into farmers’ bank accounts as an incentive to make the switch.
Pip: Over 23,000 farmers covered nearly 2.36 lakh acres in 2025 alone. The online registration portal is already live for 2026-27, so the ramp-up is already in motion.
Mara: And Punjab isn’t only managing what grows — it’s also managing when people work. The heat response is next.
Podcast Episode : Fitness Milestones and Heatwave Adjustments
Mara: Two stories this week sit at the intersection of public health and the outdoors — one about getting people moving, the other about protecting them from the heat while they do it.
Pip: The 75th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle drew participation across more than 8,000 locations, with Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront as the centrepiece, themed “Pedalling to 2030.”
Mara: Actor Ayushmann Khurrana was direct about what the event represents: “Sports is not only about winning medals; it is about discipline, sacrifice and creating aspirations. Looking at the children participating here today, I genuinely believe many future medallists of India are amongst us.”
Pip: That’s a real claim — the movement has now engaged over 50 lakh cyclists and reached more than 7 crore Indians online and on the ground since launching in December 2024.
Mara: Meanwhile, Punjab issued a separate order shifting all government offices and schools to a 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM schedule, effective May 25, to keep workers and students out of peak afternoon heat during the ongoing heatwave.
Pip: Cycling toward 2030 in the morning, home before noon. The enforcement picture is just as active.
Crackdowns on Smuggling and Financial Fraud
Mara: Two enforcement actions this week show agencies moving on very different kinds of illegal trade — one at the border, one inside the banking system.
Pip: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence ran operations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, and West Bengal, and what they found hidden inside shipments of furniture and metal chair parts was not furniture.
Mara: The DRI seized nearly 3,00,000 electronic cigarettes and vapes valued at over Rs 120 crore — all sourced from China, all prohibited under India’s 2019 ban on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, mis-declared at customs to slip through scrutiny.
Pip: Furniture. They hid vapes inside furniture declarations. The audacity is almost architectural.
Mara: On the financial side, the CBI filed its first chargesheet in the IDFC First Bank case — 15 accused, including bank officials, Haryana government public servants, and shell entity directors, charged in connection with an alleged Rs 504 crore misappropriation of state government funds. Additional chargesheets are expected.
Pip: From paddy fields to cycling tracks to customs docks — quite a week.
Mara: Water conservation, public fitness, and financial accountability — the throughline is institutions being pushed to do more with what they have.
Pip: And sometimes what they have is 3 lakh vapes in a furniture shipment. More from Truth India News next time.
