The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had urged the Election Commission to suspend the organizational elections of the SAD on the directions of his bosses Rahul Gandhi
Chandigarh, December 12 – Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema today condemned the conspiracy. The scheme aims to prevent the SAD from contesting gurdwara committee elections in Haryana. He announced the party would take recourse to legal action. The aim is to contest this injustice.
Haryana government issued a new notification
The SAD leader said that the Haryana government had issued a new notification. The notification stops all parties registered with the Election Commission. These parties are registered under Article 29 – A of the Representation of Peoples Act. These parties are not allowed to contest the gurdwara elections. All parties registered under Article 29 – A can’t contest these elections. He said the notification stated that such a party can’t form a group to contest the elections. It also said that they can’t apply for a symbol for the same.
Gurdwara elections :Notification as illegal and unconstitutional
Dr Daljit Cheema termed the notification as illegal and unconstitutional. He said, “Earlier, the Delhi government tried to exclude the SAD from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections. They attempted this by issuing a similar notification. But, the party had approached the high court.” The court ruled this is a secular right that can’t be infringed upon.
Akali Dal to approach the courts.
Dr. Cheema appealed to the Haryana Gurdwara Commission to withdraw the notification. He stated, “If they don’t, we will approach the courts. This is an attack on our democratic rights.” He also detailed how the Haryana government had earlier enacted a law. This Act aimed to break the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). It sought to transfer control of gurdwara in Haryana to a Committee propped up by it.
The 1925 Gurdwara Act continues to be in effect.
He said that the 1925 Gurdwara Act is still in force. But, the Haryana government is taking harsh and illegal actions. They want to keep SAD out of the election process.
